First Meet Tomorrow at Parliament

Hi All,

I apologize for the multiple emails. We simply have a great deal going on. Let me give you a quick tutorial on the dive meet.

Tomorrow is our first meet. For those of you who are new to dive, let me explain a few things about meets. A team is only allowed to dive 32 divers at a given meet. This won't be an issue for us tomorrow. Even though we have a roster of 40 divers. We have 16 divers reporting as unavailable tomorrow (do you want to know how to hurt a dive coaches feelings? report as unavailable for a dive meet). So anyone who can dive, we would want them to dive.

Freshman (10 and below) are required to dive three dives. They must have a front dive or fall in. A back dive or back fall in and a optional dive that can be as difficult as they want or as easy as a pencil dive. If a diver fails at more than one dive (i.e., feet touch before hands or head on a front or back dive they will be disqualified). If we have a diver who is unable to complete these dives in practice or is not close to competing these dives in practice, we will typically hold them out for a week and allow them some more practice time.

Juniors compete 4 dives. Intermediates compete 5 dives and Seniors compete 6 dives.

The coaches have already prepared the meet sheets for each diver. Tomorrow morning they will confirm the meet sheets with each diver and then have them sign it. If there is a problem or the diver wants to change a dive, they can do so both tomorrow morning and shortly before the meet tomorrow afternoon. Coaches will also talk to any divers who don't have the correct number of dives for their division and determine if they should dive tomorrow night.

Tomorrow is an away meet. That means we will need to transport the team and be on site no later than 4:45 as our warmup starts at 5pm. In the olden days (pre-covid) we use to carpool the kids to the site. I am happy to take 4-5 kids with me. If you are still acting out of an abundance of caution, no worries, but you will need to have your diver there by 4:45. Where is there? Parliament is located at 8510 Parliament Drive in Springfield, VA 22151. Waze says to plan on a 30 minute drive from our pool to theirs and arrive their at 4:45. That means we will need to leave Greenbriar no later than 4:15. We typically meet at the pool and follow each other from there. If you need your diver to be carpooled, no problem they will just need to be at Greenbriar pool by  4:10.

Time line:

Warm up is 5-5:45

Freshman Girls will go first and they will start at 6pm. Each age group will follow as soon as the previous one is complete. I know you will be tempted to head home as soon as your diver is complete but please consider staying. Our Senior divers are very good and you will be amazed at some of the dives you will see. They could also use your support. Additionally, you won't want to miss the post meet party (see below)

What do I eat? Parliament will have a snack bar open. Concessions will open at 5:45pm and stay open through 8:00pm and will offer grilled cheese pizza, pulled pork sandwiches, mac&cheese, cup o’noodles, and candy & chips, as well as a variety of drinks (e.g. Gatorade, bottled water, soda). We will provide ice water and cups in large coolers at the table and in the team areas for athletes, volunteers, and coaches to help themselves.

After the meet? Greenbriar Dive always heads back to the McDonalds at Greenbriar Shopping Center after each meet. The kids eat some ice cream and bond as a team. McD's has been the teams hangout as long as anyone can remember and most Seniors remember it as the place they had the most fun and laughed the loudest. Parents are invited and say the same things as they get to know other parents and laugh at all that is going on.

Sorry for the long email but like I said, there is lots going on. Who knows if we will win or lose tomorrow but let's encourage each other and have a great deal of fun.

Thanks,

Joel
