Greenbriar Diving 2022
Hello All,
This is a very difficult message for me to write but unfortunately, I will not be returning to coach Greenbriar this Summer.
Since 2017 I have primarily lived in Charlottesville, traveling back up to Fairfax every Summer for the Greenbriar dive season. Each year, I would stay with my father in Herndon between the months of June-August and then return to Charlottesville once the dive season ended. It was the perfect Summer coaching position, and during the months of September-May I would resume my life at UVA.
In September of 2020, during my last semester of College, I took on the Head Diving Coach position at Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA for short). I strictly coached the FUMA High School Diving Team from September 2020- May 2021, and then returned to Greenbriar for what turned out to be the greatest season of coaching I've ever had. When I left Greenbriar this past August, I couldn't have been happier with what our team had accomplished. I fully planned on coming back in June 2022 and was excited for the future of Greenbriar Diving.
However, in September of 2021, I received a phone call from Tim Fisher who is the Head of Alexandria Dive Club. Together, we began a satellite branch of Alexandria Dive Club at the FUMA Aquatic Center called "ADC @ FUMA". I'm the Head Coach of "ADC @ FUMA," and have been super busy building my diving club since September. The sport of Diving in Central Virginia is fairly underdeveloped, and through the creation of my club I was able to land multiple High School coaching jobs within the area. Currently, I'm the Head Diving Coach of 4 separate High School Diving Teams who all practice out of the FUMA Aquatic Center.
I have become fully immersed in the diving culture of Central Virginia, and thus I'm faced with a tough decision. If I leave behind my diving club during the months of June-August to coach Greenbriar, I will hault all of the momentum I've built up since September. Just like Greenbriar, I'm working with an entire community of families and they are counting on my diving club to be a year-round offering. So, I've decided to take the next step in my coaching career and commit all of my energy into year-round club diving. I desperately wish I could coach both my diving club and Greenbriar at the same time, but it's just not feasible.
I still remember my first practice on the Greenbriar Diving Team in June 2009. I was unsure what the sport of diving was and if I'd even like it. I knew how to do a front dive, and because of that the Dive Coach pressured me into chucking a front flip. I probably smacked numerous times, but I'll never forget the moment I successfully landed my first "new dive". It felt electric, and I immediately knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life diving. Through this sport, I have met countless wonderful people and been afforded endless opportunities. Diving is the best thing that's ever happened to me, but it never would have happened at all if it weren't for Greenbriar.
Coaching the Greenbriar Dolphins for the past 9 Summers has been an absolute honor. I've enjoyed every minute of working with your children, getting to know their different personalities both on/off the diving board. Hearing them laugh while learning new dives, conquering fears, or just running in circles by the sand-pit has been such a fulfilling experience.
All of us together, divers, parents, and coaches included, have built something truly special at Greenbriar. I hope you all will continue to celebrate the Dolphin diving spirit, because I know I will miss it dearly.
With Love,
Samson Miller
